Peter and two Hoa Bushmen on the track of a Kudu
African Excursions and the D'Kar Trust have teamed up on the TRAKS (Transferring Ancient Knowledge and Skills) project. TRAKS is about providing an economically sustainable way to preserve the hunting heritage and traditional skills of the few remaining Bushmen who really did live the hunter/gatherer lifestyle. Their way of life is the first human culture and the one man spent the most time living and which had the greatest influence on our evolution. These hunts offer a unique chance to not only have an awesome hunting experience but to help preserve a precious hunting heritage that we all share. In the photos on the left, the man with the light colored hat in the 2nd picture from the top is the guy who runs down a kudu in David Attenborough's Life of Mammals. Watch it on Youtube.
Today, Bushmen have little opportunity to hunt, and if they do, it's not with the traditional bow and arrow. These skills are slowly slipping away. The TRAKS project involves getting several of the old men who in the 50's and 60's hunted as a means of survival and teaming them with younger Bushmen. The pairs will guide bowhunters and at the same time the younger Bushmen will be learning from the old men. The program also brings needed income and meat into the community.
The hunting takes place on Dqãe Qare, an 18,500 acre game farm, run by the D'Kar Trust, a bushman non-profit organization. Dqãe Qare is located in the Ghanzi District of Botswana, in the heart of the Kalahari. Dqãe Qare is teaming with duiker, eland, gemsbok, giraffe, hartebeest, impala, kudu, springbok, steenbok, warthog, wildebeest, and zebra.
Track
and stalk with the legendary San Bushman of the Kalahari. These trips
